Budding Togolese footballer Gueli Koffi currently plays for Deportuvo de Mongomo in Equatorial Guinea. After a season full of achievements, Koffi expounds on his envisaged aspirations, his ties with Togo, and the possibility of playing for the Sparrowhawks in international leagues.
Q: How are your holidays going, Gueli?
The holidays are going great! I always love being with family and having time to myself.
Q: Give us a brief overview of your season competing with Deportuvo de Mongomo in Equatorial Guinea.
I think I performed well. I played 26 matches in which I managed to score 15 goals, 11 from the league and 4 from the cup. It has been a good year, and I am pleased with what I achieved.
Q: Given it is such an impressive performance, what shall we expect from you in the near future?
I have received offers from many countries including Europe, the Gulf and several African countries. My manager is sorting the best options. But for now, it means Deportuvo is going to play in the CAF Cup and this might be exciting if I remain in the club.
Q: There have been speculations that you might soon gain Equatorial Guinea citizenship and represent the country in its national team. Is that the case?
It is correct that I have been offered and discussed that option, but I have yet to sign anything. I am Togo at heart, and I hope to choose wisely when the time comes.
Q: Do you know the Togo Sparrowhawks coaching staff in any capacity?
No, not yet. I am positive they have followed my progress, however, there are no expectations on my end related to selection. I will allow my work on the pitch to do the talking.
Q: You surely wish to play for the national team of Togo.
Definitely! For every young Togolese footballer, representing the Sparrowhawks in a yellow jersey is a fantasy. If a chance comes, I’ll be prepared. In case it doesn’t, it doesn’t matter, it’s not the end of the world. The main thing is to develop as a player and do well with my team.
Gueli Koffi is a talented up-coming player who has ambitions that go beyond her success in Equatorial Guinea. She trains in Togo but has aspirations of playing internationally one day.
